Aventis Pharmaceuticals Inc said Tuesday it will launch its first-ever prescription drug, a heartburn medication that has helped its patients with symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
The company also said its new Nexium product will be launched in the U. S. next year.
Aventis said it expects to receive more than $1 billion in annual sales, as well as $250 million from drug sales. The company also is selling a new version of Zantac that treats ulcers caused by a virus, called COVID-19.
As part of its full-year financial results, Ambit will sell the company's Prevacid and Prevacid Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) products, along with a number of generic versions of Nexium, Zantac and Prilosec. Ambit also will sell the company's Protonix and Protonix Nexium capsules, both of which are sold as generic versions of Zantac.
Ambit has not disclosed its full-year results, although it is expected to lose its U. rights to the product in 2009.
Aventis shares have fallen $3.33 to close at $48.31, while shares of Ambit, a unit of Ambit Inc., have risen $1.75. Ambit is also reporting a loss of $1.45 per share.
Ambit has sold its U. rights to Prevacid and Prevacid Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) products in the U. and Canada, Ambit said in a statement.
Nexium and Nexium Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) tablets are the first medicines to treat the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and the most prescribed medication in the United States since Viagra and Cialis were first approved in 1998. The company also is selling a new version of its Zantac product, the only new medication on the U. market, that will be available to patients through Nov. 9, 2009, Ambit said in a statement.
Ambit will offer patients an alternative to Zantac, which can be purchased as a generic version of the prescription drug. Ambit said that generic versions of the two products may not be available.
Aventis said it expects to receive more than $500 million in annual sales from the product.
Ambit said it expects to pay out $3.2 billion in sales for the drug from the company's existing and future sales.
Ambit also said it has completed and expanded its research into the heartburn drug, Prevacid and Protonix, and expects to spend $1.1 billion on research this year.
Ambit's sales have grown 8 percent in the past two years. Ambit said that it is developing a new, less expensive, medication for GERD, which it has begun marketing in the U. but which is currently being developed in other countries. Ambit said it will submit a drug application to the U. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Nov. 9, 2009.

If you have persistent or longstanding, frequently recurring symptoms even after treatment with this medicine, you should contact your doctor. Taking this medicine • You can take your tablet at any time of the day either with food or on an empty stomach. • Swallow your tablet whole with half a glass of water. Do not chew or crush the tablet. This is because the tablet contains coated pellets, which stop the medicine from being broken down by the acid in your stomach. It is important not to damage the pellets.
Alternative method of taking this medicine• Put the tablet in a glass of still (non-fizzy) water. Do not use any other liquids. • Stir until the tablet breaks up (the mixture will not be clear) then drink the mixture straight away or within 30 minutes. Always stir the mixture just before drinking it. • To make sure that you have drunk all of the medicine, rinse the glass very well with half a glass of water and drink it. The solid pieces contain the medicine – do not chew or crush them

The majority of excipients are excreted in the urine within 30 minutes after administration.
